Lean’s eyes illuminate truth. And Egil Haaskjold Larsen knows it. That’s why he begins his debut feature recording the arduous journey of a family crossing all Europe to reach Sweden from their native country, presumably located in North Africa; delivering a film in which a girl’s beautiful and pure gaze takes over everything (including the audience). Edited in blocks, with sequence shots and a (low) handheld camera as his hallmarks, Haaskjold avoids misery porn to embrace hope. The only thing he forgets is that Lean’s eyes don’t need music.
