According to Kenneth Clark, “nude” refers to an idealized and pleasing state of undressedness while “naked” refers to an embarrassed and self-conscious body. In this sense, it is important to note that in Empathy, Jeffrey Rovinelli (director) and Em Cominotti (protagonist) share credit as screenwriters and producers. The body of Cominotti, who is a prostitute addicted to heroin, is delivered to a camera that acts both as a video-diary and a confessional, but also to a construction in which it is more important to dissect her nakedness than to represent it. The damaged body that is “naked” instead of the desired “nude”.
