Clio Barnard’s first feature (The Arbor, 2010) familiarized us with the technique of ‘verbatim theatre’, a procedure that takes previous recordings and synchronizes them with the movement of the lips of the actors playing the sound. Notes on Blindness uses this in order to recreate the life of blind professor John Hull, who for years kept audio diaries about his blindness and how to live with it. These feelings are expressed in the film through a remarkable sound design by Joakim Sundström (a BAFTA winner for Berberian Sound Studio) and a sumptuous cinematography by Gerry Floyd. With this mix, Notes on Blindness makes us touch the images. It is a stimulating exercise of filmic Braille.
