Extraordinary in the strict sense of the term, La Noche exhibits a clinical coldness and the secret conviction that cinema is the instrument for the unrepeatable. The director trips into the night to star in an endless marathon of sexual encounters, intake of drugs, alcohol and casual acquaintances, in order to find the difference in the incessant flow of a routine that works as a refutation and a spell of ordinary life. Castro’s images hold a ring of truth and unexpected beauty that seize the audience with a force that most of the existing films leave aside, perhaps out of modesty or a simple lack of courage. The camera attached to the body, the offscreen and the ambient noise create a pitiless journey whose destination could be the fleeting encounter with the inner ghosts, without any kind of comment or moral epiphanies.
